the product is just what I needed for my dog outsideI received and installed this last weekend in a 22 cubic feet well insulated feral cat house. So far it has done a really good job of heating the house. I did have an entrance and exit that were left open and when the night time temperatures varied from a high of 20 to a low of -3 F. the house stayed near 40. We are now in a bitter cold snap when the wind chills are dipping the temperatures to -20 and below. The cats love the heat source so I decided to block one of their exits with insulation and see how much of a difference it made in temperature. It really warmed things up. The night it was -3 outside, I had to crank the heater up all the way and it was around 40 inside. Once I blocked the exit ( still leaving a 7 inch x 7 inch opening) the temperature on high jumped to well above 70. I was able to turn it down to medium and it is still above 60!!!My only complaint is the temperature dial. It is somewhat hard to read. The cover on the dial doesn't stay open on its own so you need to hold it open while turning the dial. I also wish the top heat plate was a bit longer to push more of the heat downward. The cat house has a top lid that opens up and whenever I open it up, there is always a blast of heat.It does give me complete piece of mind to know that the cats are warm and out of the wind. Before the hound heater I was using a light bulb in a light socket covered with a tin can that had holes poked in it. It worked well, but I had to use a black light so that it wasn't so bright. I also worried about the light bulb burning out and not knowing it.The true test will be in a few days when the night time temp dips to -14 and the wind chills go to -30 or below. I will update then with temperature readings.Updated January 29, 2014. The past 2 nights have been bitter cold. The temps have been -15 and wind chills -25 to -30. The temps inside the insulated house with a 7"x7" opening never dropped below 35! The cats stayed very comfortable. I did have to turn it up to high. Tonight it is 14 and windchill -10 and on high it's 59 inside!!!! Just love this heater.Another update: March 26, 2014: Winter does not want to let up here in Central Ohio. Last night it was 13! My 2 ferals have been the happiest cats ever all winter long. The heater has worked better than ever and provides them the warmth needed. Most of the time, I can set the dial between medium and low and it's at least 50 inside. I am so happy to have found this awesome product.EDIT: I am now into the second winter with this product. It continues to perform as advertised. I have it connected to a smart switch. I am able to tell my Echo device to turn the heater off and on. I also have a timer set so I don't leave it on overnight. One of my dogs just LOVES to be out in the yard. With this heater in his dog house I know be has a warm dry place to crash and I feel good about letting him be outside in the winter if he wants.Purchased this heater to install in our Dog Palace Dog house. The dog house is plastic and insulated. Install was as easy as marking out and drilling four holes. If you use a plastic dog house, do not over tighten nuts.Install took 15 minutes. I plugged it into a Waterproof outdoor smart plug. Allows me to turn on/off on a schedule so I don't forget. It is also tapped into my smart home so I can turn in/off by voice or app.A couple of days after the install, temperature dropped to single digits in New England. With the thermostat set half way, the Hound Heater kept the interior at a steady 50 degrees. And that is with only 1/2 the dog house door mounted (for training). It is possible to set the temperature quite a bit higher if desired. Before purchase, I had several questions related to mounting the unit in a plastic dog house. I emailed the company and the owner responded very quickly. And it was after business hours. We emailed back and forth several times. Company was responsive and helpful.I almost did not purchase because of some negative reviews. But my unit works perfectly. There is a warranty for those who describe having problems. And the parts are replaceable and inexpensive if out of warranty. One person complained that their dog chewed through the cord. Dogs do chew things. So I ran my cord through PVC to be safe. Really can't blame company because dog chewed it up.Bottom line is it keeps my dogs comfortable. And I don't have to worry if they are out in the cold. My only complaint is the smell of the heater when I first started using it. It took 3 days of continuous use to burn off the smell. But now no more smell.Definitely recommend,I purchased this unit in 2016 and it was somewhat difficult to install in my dog's house. The temperature setting knob is difficult to access and see from the top, where I had to lift the roof to mount it to the rear wall. I also installed an inside/outside thermometer so I can see how warm it is. I've been reading some of the negative remarks about this heater and think that they are the fault of quality control by the manufacturer. Maybe I was lucky with my purchase, I don't know but, they still have the best rating out there so I am going to replace it with another one and let everyone know.Barely does anything in a large dog house. You can feel the unit warming up, when your hand is close to it, but even after a full day, the temperature only went up 3 degrees C.Used it in a large fully insulated dog house, with a door, at -23C (-9F) and it took all day to barely make a difference, still -20C in there.Monitored the temperature with a infrared heat gun and it was very disappointing. Thermostat was on Max and installed as per instructions.Gave it two stars, as it seems like its built solid and it might be ok in a small dog house, in a warmer climate.Don't waste your money if you live in Canada. Took it out and replaced it with a heat lamp and small fan for air circulation. We bought the Hound Heater to put in our "cat house" for the winter. We live in Canada where it can get down to -40 C, and even when it gets very cold (so far this year only to -35C) the hound heater still keeps the house warm. The house is about the size of a large dog house, 4ft by 4ft on the inside, for reference. I highly recommend this product to keep your outside critters warm in the winter. On a low setting the heater would definitely keep the temperature above 0C and not make much of a difference on your power bill.Horrible, I have a fairly small doghouse and it can barely keep it warm up here in Canada. It’s only October and Hovering around 0 degrees Celsius and it hardly heat the insulated house and now I will have to figure something else out for the dogs fast. I will be in contact with Akoma shortlyI would have to say that it worked really well for one season. I have a great dane with a large dog house. The heater was able to keep up with the winters here on the saskatchewan flat lands, but it didn't make it a full year. I was hoping to get a couple of years out of it, but it only worked for a couple of months, which is not what i expect given the price.Worked great for me. Lived in Winnipeg, last week we dipped to -47 with the chill.Set the heater to med-high those days and my thermostat in there dipped to 11c overnight. No door, just a divider. 2x4 r12 insulated and sealed (except the door). My malinois did just fine.Think its a great product if it gives me a few years.. only had a couple months so far.
